Hahnemühle fine art papers for artists
Paper is a creative decision as well as a production choice. The Hahnemühle range offers different ways to present an artwork, from the subtle surface of Photo Rag to more pronounced traditional paper textures.
Photo Rag · a quieter surface
Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 is a useful reference when exploring a smooth matte fine art print. Consider this direction for detailed drawings, delicate tonal transitions and artwork where you want the image to take precedence over the paper texture.
William Turner · a watercolour character
Hahnemühle William Turner is a mould-made watercolour paper coated for fine art inkjet printing. Its pronounced texture can complement expressive painting and watercolour reproductions. Test fine lines and small details on the actual surface before choosing it for an edition.
German Etching is another textured Hahnemühle paper worth discussing for art reproductions. The right surface is a matter of how your particular image behaves in print, rather than a universal best paper.
Hahnemühle Museum Etching · 350 gsm
A heavyweight, natural-white cotton paper with a matte finish and a fine felt texture. Museum Etching is an option to compare for art editions where the weight and tactile presence of the sheet are part of the presentation. It contains no optical brighteners. Hahnemühle Albrecht Dürer · 210 gsm
Albrecht Dürer is a mould-made paper made from 50% cotton and 50% alpha cellulose, with a pronounced watercolour texture and matte coating. Its lighter weight offers a different feel from Museum Etching. It is worth exploring for watercolour and other art reproductions where a traditional paper surface complements the image.

A bright-white alpha-cellulose paper with a subtly textured, pearl-gloss surface. FineArt Pearl is a direction to explore for photographic artwork, rich colour and black-and-white imagery when you want a reflective finish rather than a matte surface.
Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl · 320 gsm
Photo Rag Pearl combines a 100% cotton base with a natural-white shade and a pearl finish. Its gently textured surface and warmer paper white distinguish it from FineArt Pearl. Compare both papers with your artwork if the balance between paper character, highlights and sheen is central to the print.

Rag Photographique II · smooth cotton
Canson Infinity Rag Photographique II is a 100% cotton paper with a smooth surface. It is a useful starting point for artwork that needs a restrained paper texture, nuanced tones and clear detail.

Canson Infinity Edition Etching Rag II provides a different route for artists seeking the character of a traditional fine art paper. Compare it with a smooth rag paper using the same artwork to see how the surface changes your perception of line, colour and empty space.
Choosing between Hahnemühle and Canson
There is no single winner for every painting or drawing. Compare paper shade, surface texture, weight and the printed result. A paper that suits a vivid acrylic reproduction may feel too assertive for a pale pencil drawing.

This matte, mould-made paper is made from alpha cellulose and has a clearly defined felt texture. It offers a tactile alternative to smooth cotton papers. For expressive drawings or painterly reproductions, a proof helps establish whether that texture adds to the work or competes with its finer marks.
Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta · 315 gsm
A cotton paper with a high-gloss baryta coating, Photo Rag Baryta offers a different presentation from matte art papers. Consider this direction for photographic elements, deep shadows or mixed-media images where a reflective finish is part of the intended result.
Canson Infinity ARCHES Aquarelle Rag · 310 gsm
This matte, 100% cotton inkjet paper has a textured, mould-made watercolour base. It is an option to explore when you want the print to retain the visual character of a traditional artist paper. For watercolours, compare both the paper grain and the treatment of pale washes.
Canson Infinity Platine Fibre Rag · 310 gsm

How to choose a paper for a painting or drawing
Start with the marks that matter
Look at the most important parts of the artwork: fine pencil lines, broad brushwork, soft gradients or saturated blocks of colour. Use these areas in your test print. A reduced overview shows the whole composition; a crop at the intended print scale reveals whether small details hold together.
Compare the paper white
Unprinted areas become part of the image. Paper shade is especially noticeable in botanical drawings, pale watercolours and work with generous borders. Compare samples alongside the original when possible, under consistent light.
Balance texture and detail
A textured sheet can give a reproduction a satisfying tactile presence, but more texture is not automatically more faithful. A digital file may already contain the texture of the original canvas or paper. Adding a strongly textured printing surface can change that effect.
Think beyond the print itself
Decide whether the artwork will sit behind a mount, show an unprinted border or be presented with the paper edge visible. These choices influence the image size, sheet size and space required for a signature. Confirm image dimensions separately from the overall paper dimensions.

01 · Share the work
Tell us about the original medium, file dimensions, intended print sizes, quantities and deadline. If the work has not been digitised, contact us before arranging capture so we can discuss what the print file needs.
02 · Review a proof
Assess colour, detail, paper and borders in a physical test print. Agree adjustments and the final specification before production.
03 · Produce your collection
Print a small batch, prepare an exhibition or plan repeat orders around an approved specification. Mounting, framing and packaging can be discussed alongside the prints.
Build an edition that can grow with your practice
Before launching a print collection, decide how each artwork will be offered. An open edition and a numbered limited edition require different record keeping. Define the edition size and any size variants clearly, and keep a record of prints produced, signed and sold.
For recurring production, an approved reference print and documented specifications give future orders a consistent starting point. If a paper changes or becomes unavailable, agree a replacement and review a new proof before continuing the collection.
More time in the studio.
If you sell prints regularly, we can discuss an ongoing production and fulfilment arrangement: printing, quality control, packaging and shipping preparation. Branded inserts and artist-supplied certificates can be included by agreement.

A Belgian print partner for European artists
Artists across Europe can work with us remotely. Share your artwork files and project requirements, discuss the paper options, and arrange physical proofs before the final run. You do not need to live near Antwerp to develop a consistent print collection with us.
For a travelling exhibition, a gallery presentation or a growing online collection, we can discuss production in Belgium and shipment to the required destination. Let us know the exhibition opening date or customer deadline early so we can assess the full schedule, including proofing and finishing.

Producing selected orders in Europe can bring the production stage closer to European customers and exhibition venues.
